MERRIAM, Evelyn Mary (Eve) recently of Halifax - Dartmouth, formerly of Port Greville, Cumberland County, passed away on March 05, 2013 at Camp Hill, Veterans' Memorial Building surrounded by her loving family. Born on November 21, 1919 in Putney, London, England, she was the youngest daughter of the late Ernest and Evelyn (Kempthorne) Thorne. Eve was a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Prior to World War 11, she worked in several secretarial positions in London and in 1942 enlisted in the British Army, Auxiliary Territorial Service, where she drove ambulances and 3 ton trucks to support the war effort in London during the Blitz. She met and married Donald St. Clair Merriam, who was serving on motor gun boats in the English Channel for the Royal Canadian Navy. As a War Bride, Eve and her eldest son came by slow convoy to Halifax in January, 1945. Eve had many friends in the Port Greville area where she settled and enjoyed village life very much. She always marvelled at the beautiful Bay of Fundy at her door step. Upon retiring, she became an avid oil painter and needlewoman. Eve found great enjoyment in painting scenes of Halifax, Dartmouth, Port Greville and her native England. After forty-six years of marriage, Donald passed away in 1988 and Eve moved to Edgemere Seniors' Apartments in Dartmouth, became a member of the Dartmouth Seniors Centre painting group and also made many friends through her participation in activities of the Halifax Dartmouth War Brides Association. Later she was a resident at Victoria Hall in Halifax for five years. She was an enthusiastic member of the Knitting Group and used her creativity and needlework skills to make 2000 finger puppets and stuffed toys for the IWK Children’s Hospital. Eve is survived by her sons Peter (Sharon) and Thomas (Barbara) and her daughter, Donna, all of Dartmouth, grandchildren Deborah (Michael Peckham), Edmonton, Joanne (Alan Slone), Nashville, Scott Moran and Courtney Merriam, both of Dartmouth, great-grandchildren Audrey and Dominic, Edmonton, and many nieces and nephews in Canada and the United States. She will be greatly missed by all those who knew her and never forgotten by her family. The family would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to Dr. Lewis, all the nurses and the care staff on Garrison 5 West for their care and countless kindnesses. Visitation will be held Friday at the Atlantic Funeral Home, 771 Main Street, Dartmouth from 7 to 9 p.m. A memorial service to celebrate Eve’s life will be held in the chapel Saturday at 2 p.m. with Jane Blannin-Bruleigh officiating. Interment will be at a later date at Grace United Church, Port Greville. Memorial donations may be made to Easter Seals, Victoria Hall Trust or a charity of choice.
