MAWDESLEY (RYAN/HAYWARD), Kathleen “Karen” Marie, of Dartmouth, passed away on March 12, 2017 in the Dartmouth General Hospital.
Karen was born in Windsor, Ont. and raised in her early childhood near Dorchester, Ont. Her early years were spent on the farm living with her grandparents. At the age of 16, she returned to Windsor and shortly thereafter married her first husband and had 2 wonderful daughters from that marriage. After her divorce, she met and married her present husband, moved to Halifax and later adopted her third lovely daughter. She worked at numerous jobs until she trained as a cake decorator working for Dominion Stores in Windsor, Halifax and Dartmouth and at Leaven Heaven Bakery in Dartmouth. After a career change and completion of her training in Ottawa, she became a PCW in the Halifax area until the family was transferred to the United Kingdom in 1998 at which time she retired. She truly loved her time in Europe and enjoyed travelling to new and exciting countries. Returning to Halifax in 2004, she resided in Mineville and Dartmouth and though retired, she managed to fill her days and keep herself occupied.
Karen was a very special and gifted person who saw the world differently and more positively than most. She loved all people and could always be found talking to complete strangers who quickly warmed to her. She was always quick to help when it was needed and constantly brought joy into people’s lives. She always had a smile on her face that helped lift the spirits of all those around her. Karen was a very tactile type person who encouraged all to experience the feel of materials around them and saw only good in the world. She will be terribly missed by all that knew her and most particularly by those that loved her.
Karen is survived by her loving husband Geoffrey; loving daughter Tracy (Ryan), her husband Mark Gratton, Windsor, Ont. and granddaughters Lindsay and Carlie; loving daughter Shelly Wilson (Ryan) and grandsons Ryan and Gage, Windsor, Ont; loving daughter Erika Deyoung (Mawdesley), her husband Matt, Sackville; her nephews and her Aunt Alice Renaud, Kingston, Ont. She was pre-deceased by her mother Reta Wollos, Windsor, Ont; father Lloyd Hayward, Windsor, Ont.; sister Terry Zaborek (Wollos), Windsor, Ont., and by her maternal and paternal grandparents.
At Karen's request, her remains have been cremated. Visitation will be held in the Atlantic Funeral Home Chapel, 771 Main Street, Dartmouth, from 6:00 to 8:00 pm on Friday, March 17. Her funeral service will be held at the same location on Saturday, March 18th commencing at 2:00 pm and will be followed by a reception in the Chapel reception room and toast to her life.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canada or to the Canadian Cancer Society in her name.
On-line condolences may be made at: www.atlanticfuneralhomes.com
