Ibsen </b> </p> <p> </p> <p> </p> <p> &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; <b> Former </b> <b> Dartmouth City </b> <b> Councilor and well respected Chiropractor, Doctor George F. Ibsen, age 88, passed away December 30, 2012 while surrounded and being comforted by his family.&nbsp; </b> <b> &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Dr. Ibsen, born in 1924 at Canard, Kings County was the son of the late Frederick and Minnie (Norman). He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.&nbsp; </b> <b> </b> </p> <p> <b> &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; He is survived by his loving and devoted wife Velma &ldquo;Vel&rdquo; (Hancock), son Darren (Janet) of Halifax and daughter Lisa (Bruce Caddell) of Dartmouth. He is also survived by the lights of his life, grand-children Taylor, Madison, Sara, and Jack.&nbsp; He will be missed by his very special nieces and nephews.&nbsp; </b> <b> &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; </b> </p> <p> <b> &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; He was predeceased by brothers, Dr. Norman of Edmonton, Miles (Lloyd) of Halifax, Harry QC of Scarborough and Arnold in infancy.&nbsp; </b> <b> </b> </p> <p> <b> &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; George obtained his early education in Halifax schools graduating from St. Mary&rsquo;s and the Palmer School of&nbsp;&nbsp; Chiropractic in Davenport, Iowa. </b> </p> <p> <b> &nbsp;&nbsp; </b> <b> &nbsp;&nbsp; A virtual pioneer in the chiropractic field, George established his clinic in the Woodlawn area of Dartmouth and served his patients&rsquo; needs for more than 50 years.&nbsp; <br /> <br /> </b> <b> &nbsp;&nbsp; </b> <b> &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; While extremely active in the community his entire life George&rsquo;s main priority and dedication was his wife and family.&nbsp; </b> <b> </b> </p> <p> <b> &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;He was elected Alderman to Dartmouth City Council for three terms in the 1970&rsquo;s and was also appointed Deputy Mayor. During his tenure on Council he helped guide the city during the period it was considered the fastest growing municipality in Eastern Canada. &nbsp;He served on all major Council committees including the Dartmouth School Board. During this period he was also a member of the City&rsquo;s Natal day and Winter Carnival committees. &nbsp;As an alderman George was a hard working constituency advocate whose efforts knew no bounds as he attempted to meet the needs of his ward and its residents.&nbsp; </b> <b> </b> </p> <p> <b> &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; In 1969, during the first Canada Summer Games, George was Chairman of the National sporting event&rsquo;s opening ceremonies in Halifax.&nbsp; </b> <b> </b> </p> <p> <b> &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; A tireless community leader, the consummate volunteer was a former District Governor and Secretary Treasurer of Lions Club International. As a result of his service he was awarded the coveted 100% District Governor&rsquo;s and the Membership Advancement Key Awards. &nbsp;George was King Lion for both the Halifax and Dartmouth Lions Clubs. He was a member of the Dartmouth General Hospital and Nova Scotia Hospital Boards of Directors and past president of the Nova Scotia Chiropractic Association.&nbsp; </b> <b> &nbsp; </b> </p> <p> <b> &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; He was an elder of the Woodlawn United Church and was involved in many of the churches committees.&nbsp; </b> <b> &nbsp; </b> </p> <p> <b> Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Atlantic Funeral Home, 767 Main Street, Dartmouth. No visitation by request. A service celebrating George&rsquo;s life will be held on Friday, January 11, 2013 at the Woodlawn United Church, 54 Woodlawn Road, Dartmouth for 2:00 pm with Reverend Kennedy officiating.&nbsp; </b> <b> &nbsp; </b> </p> <p> <b> A reception will be held in the Church Hall following the service.&nbsp; </b> <b> &nbsp; </b> </p> <p> <b> The family would like to extend their thanks to the many health care providers who cared for George through his cancer treatment over the past few years.&nbsp; </b> <b> &nbsp; </b> </p> <p> <b> In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Dartmouth General Hospital, Woodlawn United Church Accessibility Fund or a charity of your choice.&nbsp; </b> <b> </b> </p> <p> <b> A family graveside service will be held at a later date in White Rock cemetery, Kings County. </b> </p> </div>
