<div itemprop="description">MARCUS, William White <br /> <br />Age 92, passed away peacefully at the Camp Hill Veteran&rsquo;s Memorial Hospital, Halifax, Nova Scotia on May 1st, 2014. Born in Winnipeg, Manitoba he was the eldest son of William and Rebecca Marcus. He is survived by his loving wife of 69 years, Haroldine (Dene); sons Bill (Beverly) and Jim (friend Carrie); daughter in-law Elaine (Darrell Lightle); grandchildren Jana (Peter Oldreive), Bradley (Bailey), Erica, Mikaela; great-grandchildren Jillian and Marcus Oldreive, Laynee and Lily Marcus; sister, Betty Cappie and brother in-law Roy (Mary) Livesley. Bill is also survived by several nieces and nephews in western Canada. Bill was predeceased by two younger brothers, James Hunter and Samuel John; son Robin John Marcus; granddaughter Jill Suzanne Marcus-Mathie. <br /> <br />Before joining the navy in 1942 he was employed with the T. Eaton Company, earning a whopping $10 a week&hellip;Ha! Ha! He was assigned to the Supply Branch when enlisting in the Navy and did his basic training in Ontario. From there, he joined the East Coast Navy in Halifax. Early duties were on small escort ships doing mid-ocean convoys during the Second World War. He then remained at the Halifax dockyard until his discharge in 1945. Bill then joined the Navy Reserve in Chippawa, Manitoba. Upon his return to Manitoba, Bill married the love of his life, Haroldine in June of that year in Winnipeg. In 1951 he was posted to HMCS Naden, Victoria during the Korean War. In 1953 he returned to Winnipeg and was once again employed with the T. Eaton Company. In 1957 he was offered his commission and went to HMCS Cornwallis, Nova Scotia and remained there until 1960 when he then joined the supply ship HMCS Cape Scott in Halifax. He retired his naval career in 1966. He was a lifetime member of the HMCS Sackville. He then purchased a small wholesale business, Dartmouth Wholesalers which he and his two elder sons managed for 28 years expanding to a RV Recreational business, Willdene Enterprises, then including his youngest son as well. During these years Bill and Dene travelled to various cities across Canada and the United States. Bill semi-retired and then he and Dene spent each winter enjoying life in Florida with their new church friends and neighbors. Bill loved music, especially the piano and enjoyed taking in the various concerts and musical gatherings with their friends. In 2005 they returned from Florida for the last time. He was a member of Woodlawn United Church for fifty plus years. <br /> <br />Our sincere gratitude goes to the many caregivers on the 6th floor, East Wing of the VMB, as well as the many volunteers. Their caring and friendly attitude helped us through the difficult times in so many cases during the past two years. Visitation will be held Wednesday, May 7th from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. Funeral service will take place Thursday, May 8th at 11:00 a.m., in the funeral chapel at Atlantic Funeral Homes, Main Street Dartmouth. Susan McAlpine-Gillis officiating with reception to follow. Family flowers only.
