Age 55 of Dartmouth. It is with broken hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved husband, son, brother, uncle, friend, on July 7, 2016, at the Halifax Infirmary with family at his side. He had overcome many health challenges in his life, finally succumbing to complications from surgery.
He was born in Ottawa and grew up in Brockville, Ontario. He was a graduate of the Atlantic Computer Institute, and the Radio Broadcasting program at Loyalist College in Belleville, Ontario where he met Karen (nee Tucker), his wife of almost 26 years.
Willing to move east to Karen’s home, he took a broadcasting job at CKTO-FM in Truro, eventually coming to CHNS in Halifax. He worked in various IT, broadcasting and other positions until his health began to fail in 2003 when he was diagnosed with kidney disease. He did peritoneal dialysis at home until 2012 when he received a kidney transplant. By 2015, the new kidney began to weaken, and an internal bleed in October caused his kidney to shut down and he began hemodialysis at the Halifax Infirmary. He also overcame a heart valve replacement in 2009 and various infections along the way. He continuously amazed his healthcare professionals who often said “we haven’t seen that before.” Steve took satisfaction in his resilient spirit, meeting head-on everything life threw at him.
Steve had a great sense of humour and wit, was master of the one-liner, and joked that he had “punitis” along with his many other ailments. He loved making people laugh. He was a music buff, with Elvis as his favourite, and he liked movies, especially old black and whites.
A long-time Yankees and Bruins fan, he enjoyed sports. He was a member of the Dartmouth Slo-Pitch League, playing every Sunday until his health put him on the bench. He bowled regularly in the Rolling Stones league and loved to golf with the Tucker’s in the monthly fun scrambles at Hartlen Point. He was an elite World of Warcraft player, even being asked to be a game tester.
In 2013, he began volunteering with the team at Seaside FM, getting back to his life-long passion of being “on the radio.”
Steve is survived by his wife Karen, Mother Betty, sister Judy (John), brother Stan (April), nieces and nephews Ian, Evan, Anna, Sarah, and David, as well as his in-law family of Vera, Carol, Brenda (Bob), Jane (Jerry), Kevin (Shelly), Ronnie (Corrina), nephews Logan, Craig, Parker, nieces Desire and Jade, and great-niece Briar Lee. He was pre-deceased by Father-in-Law Ronald Tucker.
The family would like to give heartfelt thanks to all of the many doctors, nurses, and health care providers in Halifax and Dartmouth who cared for Steve over the years.
A celebration of life will take place at Atlantic Funeral Homes, 771 Main Street, Dartmouth at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, July 12. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Kidney Foundation of Canada or charity of choice. On-line condolences may be sent to: www.atlanticfuneralhomes.com Dartmouth
