Sinclair Williams
January 2, 1943 - May 6, 2014
Williams, Sinclair age 71, born in East Preston, resident of Maplestone Enhanced Care Facility went home peacefully to be with the Lord on May 6, 2014 surrounded by his loving family. He was a son of the late John & Annie (Colley) Williams. He is survived by wife Dolly; children Sonya, East Preston, Bridget, Cole Harbour, Sinclair Jr. (Christine), Toronto, Teddy (Stephanie) , Saskatchewan, Evan (Nicole) Cole Harbour; 15 grandchildren; three great grandchildren; brothers, Reuben (Freda), East Preston, James (Barbara), Winnipeg; aunt, Mary Colley, East Preston; godchildren Brian Thomas, Richard Carloss. He was predeceased by sisters Marjorie, Vera Thomas and Freda Sutherland.
He was a founding Member of New Beginnings Ministries. Sinclair worked in many jobs before becoming the First Black Police Officer hired by the City of Dartmouth in July 1968. He received a number of awards & recognitions from the Dartmouth Police Department for outstanding bravery. Along with his wife owned and operated Hilda Ann Enterprises, where they built over 30 homes in Cole Harbour, Colby Village, Eastern Passage, Lake Echo & the Preston area. He employed men from the Communities and through this; many of these men have since formed their own companies. He volunteered at the Bell Park Academic Centre as a mentor with youth with challenges. He was a role model for many in the Preston Community who became Police & RCMP Officers. He has been honored and recognized by many for his outstanding volunteer work in the Community of East Preston and beyond.
He received the 125 year Canada Celebration Medallion. He volunteered and served his community in many capacities through the Lions, East Preston Recreation Association, Sarah Jane Clayton Manor, Preston Area Housing Fund & Dartmouth East Black Learning Centre. Sinclair was the founding member of the District 8 Volunteer Fire Department, where he was appointed the first Captain for East Preston. This motivated many other community members to become volunteer fire fighters.
He Loved and Adored “Jesus Christ”, who gave him faith, love and determination to serve through his Church and Community. Sinclair's motto was “We Serve”; If I can help somebody as I pass along, than my living will not be in vain.
Arrangements are entrusted to Atlantic Funeral Home 771 Main Street Dartmouth NS. Public Viewing will be held Sunday, May 11, 2014 7-9PM in Atlantic Funeral Home.
Funeral Service will be held on Monday, May 12, 2014 1PM at New Beginnings Ministries, 26 Cherry Brook Road, Cherry Brook, Rev. Kirby Spivey III officiating. The internment will be held at Dartmouth Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to New Beginnings Ministries. Special thanks to Dr. V.
