HERNDEN, Ruth (Day)- not more than 29 if you asked her, passed away peacefully February 8, 2013 in Halifax. She was a daughter of the late Arthur and Dorothy Day, Head of Jeddore, NS.
Ruth loved to run the roads, especially Spring Garden Road to shop. She loved true crime novels, heavy dramas, Fox News, American politics, a good feed and a strong cup of tea. She loved us, her 6 children whom she raised by herself against all odds. She was a founding member of the South Shore Parents Alone Association in Bridgewater, NS and spearheaded the Block Parent Program. She co-founded and was the president of Scotia Business Center in Bridgewater that exclusively hired single parents and partners from abusive relationships. Her journey to better the lives of her children brought her to Halifax where she graduated from the Maritime School of Social Work in 1983. She worked at various agencies in HRM including Family SOS and retired from the Department of Community Services Child Welfare Division where she had become one of the best and most respected Child Protection Officers this city has known. Her strength, resilience and perseverance helped hundreds of families within our community.
