Leo MacKenzie
May 27, 1947 - August 17, 2013
MacKenzie, Leo Harris Malcome - 67 New Glasgow, Nova Scotia
Passed away at the QE2 Hospital on Saturday August the 17th.
Born in Halifax
He was the son of Alice Bennett & Maylo MacKenzie
Leo started his purchasing and manufacturing career with Hawker Siddeley at the Halifax Shipyard in 1969 where he progressed from Junior to Senior Buyer. Over the course of 24 years he accepted two promotions and transfers, moving from the shipyard to Trenton Works in New Glasgow where he worked as Purchasing Manager, then to Kokums Cancar in Burnaby, British Columbia, as Materials Manager. In 1992, Leo decided to return to Nova Scotia with his family, and accepted a position with Ultra Electronics (formerly Hermes) as Operations Manager where he worked until his retirement in 2006. Upon retirement, Leo’s experience was invaluable in helping his son, Matthew, set up his machining business, MacKenzie Atlantic, where he continued to offer his guidance and support.
Leo was Past President of the Gyros Club New Glasgow, Past Commodore of Mic Mac AAC Dartmouth. He was the road committee manager for the WPRA – the Woods People Road Association – at his cottage-turned-home community of Melmerby Beach. Leo was proud of recently becoming a status member of the Mi’kmaq Acadian Band.
At work and at home, Leo was a master of getting things done. Without fail, colleagues and family members could count on him to find the fastest and most efficient way of doing whatever was needed. He was admired for his ability to be blunt and honest while also being respectful and kind.
Music played an enormous role in Leo’s life. He started playing in a band when he was 14, and continued to play for many years with good friends in the band, The Echoes. More recently, he was the leader and rhythm guitar player of the Sounds of Motown.
Leo lived by the “three Ps” – patience, persistence and perseverance. He knew what he wanted in life, and he always found a way to make it happen.
At 18, Leo began dating the love of his life, Janice, who was then 14. From that moment on, Leo was Janice’s best friend and soul mate. They married on June 5, 1971. In 1975 they welcomed their firstborn, Angela, into their family, and in 1978, their son, Matthew. Family meant everything to Leo.
The eldest of ten children, and father of two, Leo was the rock of the MacKenzie family. For family, friends and complete strangers, Leo would drop everything to help someone who needed a hand.
Leo enjoyed riding his motorcycle with his buddies. Among his favourite trips were the Americade, Daytona and Laconia bike weeks down south.
Leo loved to tinker and work on projects. He spent time working in the garage, and his cottage was in a state of perpetual renovations. He built his cottage in 1983 and spent the next 30 years turning it into the perfect retirement home for him and Janice.
Although he had many passions, there was nothing Leo loved more than spending time with his grandson “little Leo” and summer visits with his granddaughter, Layla.
Leo had energy like no other, a hearty laugh, a determined and unwaveringly positive outlook on life. He was a respected colleague, a devoted husband and father, and a selfless friend. Leo was treasured by countless friends, and will be deeply missed.
