Ray Cooper Dickens
November 17, 1942 - October 12, 2013
Dickens, Raymond Cooper – With broken hearts we announce the passing on October 12, 2013 surrounded by his loving family after a brief but courageous battle with cancer. Born November 17, 1942, in Saint John NB, he was the middle son of the late Donald Raymond Dickens and Marjorie Irene (Trecartin) Dickens. Survived by his wife of 35 years, soul mate, best friend and business partner, Kathryn, daughters, Ashley (Brendan) Pettipas and their baby boy due this January, whom he so wanted to hold, Barbara (Phil Wells); grandson, Jesse; son, Greg (Lisa); grandchildren, Rachel and Michael; son, Steven (Maureen); grandchildren, Jacob and Katrina; brother, Eric who was very dear to him; nieces, Leslie and Abby; mother-in-law or mom, as he preferred, Bea Miner; sister-in-law, Holly Miner and her children, David and Caitlin Smithers. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his brother, Ted. Ray spent his entire working life in the optical business following his father’s footsteps. He started his career with American Optical and then worked with H.W. MacKinnon until he founded Eye World Ltd. In 1975. He never wanted to retire because he enjoyed the daily interaction with our clients many of whom have become close friends. He was a former member of the Lions Club, Dartmouth Curling Club and Grandview Golf Club. He was a past chairman of the Nova Scotia Board of Dispensing Opticians. Ray’s leisure time was spent enjoying summers at the family cottage in New Brunswick where he was most happy and playing golf both here and during his trips to Florida in recent winters. In his younger years he enjoyed fly fishing and hunting. He loved the outdoors and capturing life’s finer moments in photographs. He loved his family and treasured the good times spent together. He loved dogs and had one by his side until Casey died August 27th this year. He fondly introduced Kolby as his grand dog. We have many happy memories to share of a life well lived but ended too soon. Visitation will be held from 2-4 & 7-9 p.m. Wednesday October 16th at Atlantic Funeral Home 771 Main St., Dartmouth. A private family service will be held at a later date. Donations may be made to CNIB or a charity of choice.
