Phyllis "Mary" Hook
January 8, 1920 - October 24, 2014
HOOK, Phyllis “Mary”-94 of Dartmouth passed peacefully at home with family by her side on October 24, 2014.
Born in Yorkshire, England, she was a daughter of the late Thomas and Louisa (Atkinson) Furness. During the Second World War, from 1941 to 1945, she worked in a munitions factory to support the war effort. In 1946, she married her Canadian husband Clary and together they sailed from England, arriving in Montreal and onto Dartmouth, Nova Scotia to make a new home in Canada. She was a full-time homemaker until 1966 when she became employed with Transport Canada, Canadian Coast Guard, retiring in 1980. She was a founding member of the Halifax/Dartmouth War Brides Association. Mary enjoyed playing bridge, was an avid reader and enjoyed preparing Sunday dinners for her grandchildren and family. In 1956, Mary made her first trip back to England with her two young sons and she continued to make trips to England to visit her beloved sister Winifred and family throughout her long life.
Her huge step as a young War Bride was a brave and memorable step in her long and adventuresome life.
