<div itemprop="description">Murphy, Noreen Mary<br /> <br />Age 84, of Dartmouth, passed away peacefully in Parkstone Enhanced Care Facility on Thursday, January 1. Born in Halifax, she was a daughter of the late William and Hilda (Moir) Arsenault. Noreen is survived by her son Paul; brother Billy (Linda); nieces Nadine (Shawn) Grimm and Michelle (Mark) Williams; brother-in-law Bill Wincey and great nephews, Evan, Caleb, and Caden. Predeceased by her husband Leo; brother William Joseph in infancy; sister Sheila Wincey.<br />She was a devoted mother, wife and lover of animals including her three cats: Mitzi-Louise, Mystique, and Maybelle. She enjoyed reading, travelling and spending time with her friends.<br /> <br />Noreen graduated from the Halifax Infirmary as a nurse. She was well suited to the profession as she was always a caring person going out of her way to help someone where she could. She began her 38 year career as a public health nurse for the City of Halifax in the mid 50s. She also acted as the de-facto police woman for Halifax Police when a female suspect needed to be arrested. She moved to the Department of Health when the public health role was taken over by the Province. During this time, she spent significant time visiting junior and senior high schools to educate students about the dangers of sexually transmitted diseases. <br /> <br />She was a lifelong resident of Dartmouth and served her community and country in many ways. She was a member of the Halifax Lodge of the Order of Royal Purple, a national fraternal organization with a fund dedicated to helping children with hearing disabilities and other medical illnesses, and served in many executive capacities including several terms as the Honored Royal Lady of the Lodge. She was the founding member of the local circle of the Daughters of Isabella, an international catholic women's organization, served in many capacities including several terms as regent and was the state regent for several years. She was a member of the Charitable Irish Society of Halifax serving in many executive capacities and was the first woman president of that organization. She served for over 25 years as an officer in the 33 (Halifax) Service Battalion rising to the rank of major overseeing the medical unit. She was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Vimy Branch.<br /><br />She was an avid baseball fan and would cheer her favorite Red Soxs whenever the opportunity arose including several trips to the venerable Fenway Stadium. She was a supporter of local baseball sponsoring the Dartmouth AAA Peewee team and running the canteen at Beazley Field.<br /><br />Visitation will be held on Monday January 5th from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in Atlantic Funeral Home, 771 Main Street, Dartmouth. Funeral mass will take place on Tuesday January 6th at 10 am in Saint Peter's Catholic Church, 10 Maple Street, Dartmouth, Father Jim Richards officiating, with a reception to follow in the parish center. Burial in the Mount Herman Cemetery.<br /> <br />The family would like to thank the staff of the Parkstone's Citadel Unit for their exceptional care of Noreen during her three and one half year stay. Special thanks to Lori, Tammy, Sarah, Janet, Tim, Caitlin, Brittany, and Thomas. The family would also like to thank Sandy Duke of the Geriatrics Clinic for her assistance following Noreen's diagnosis with dementia.
