Ngena"Gena" Bernard

BERNARD, Ngena “Gena” Vera Rae, age 36, passed away suddenly on Tuesday, January 6, 2015, at the Dartmouth General Hospital. She was the daughter of Garry (Carla) Bernard and the late Hattie (Jarvis) Bernard. She was a full-time student at Dalhousie University, a graduate of the Transitional Year Program and the recipient of Dalhousie’s “Jonathan Skeete Award”. She was a Tutor with the Black Educators Association’s Cultural Awareness and Enrichment Program and a former Day Care Teacher. Her greatest accomplishment was being an exemplary and loving mother. She always put her children first and she instilled morals, values, respect and manners. In addition to her father she is survived by her sons; Jarvis, 16, and Jahnaz 15; and daughters; Niah, 9 and Nadia 3, all of Dartmouth, long-time friend and children's father, Nathan Colley, East Preston; brother, Anthony (Celeste) Bernard, Kitchener, Ontario and sister Adele (Courtney) Lewis, of Uxbridge, Ontario: Monica (Alfred) Williams, of Portsmouth, Virginia and Amber Bernard of Dartmouth; Nieces, Kristen, Velvet, Takiyah and Tiondra; Nephews, Tahfari, Stone, Cruz and Alexander and great nephews, Jamar and Jaylen; Godchildren, Tahfari Bernard-Jones, of Dartmouth, Drevon Howe of Toronto and Zaierra Bean, of Bermuda. She was predeceased by her paternal grandparents; Elsie and George Bernard and maternal grandparents; Cynthia and Victor Jarvis. She will be will be missed tremendously by her many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. She will be remembered in the community for her kind and sensitive demeanor, infectious smile and laughter as she touched the heart of everyone who knew her. Visitation will be Tuesday, January 13, 2015 from 7:00pm to 9:00pm with Funeral services to be held Wednesday, January 14, 2015 at 1:00 pm at Atlantic Funeral Home with Reverend Wayne Desmond officiating, followed by a repass all in Atlantic Funeral Home, 771 Main Street Dartmouth. Burial in Dartmouth Memorial Gardens. The family asks that in honor of the legacy Gena leaves behind, that donations be made to the Bernard-Colley Trust Fund at TD Canada Trust.
