Margaret Ann "Maggie" McFarlane
September 10, 2015
MCFARLANE, Margaret Ann “Maggie”-age 38 of Lawrencetown, died September 10, 2015 at home. Born in Sudbury Ont. She was a daughter of Robert and Marilyn McFarlane of Cole Harbour. Maggie will be greatly missed by her husband Mark Lewis and her two children Daphne Mirabel Lewis (5) and Lachlan McFarlane Lewis (3). She follows her first daughter, Mirabel Lewis, a full term stillbirth, in death. She leaves behind her parents; brothers Andrew McFarlane (Karola); nieces Julianna and Katherine, of Toronto and Chris McFarlane (Sophia); niece Maddie and nephew Cormac of Fredericton; best friend Aubrey Hilliard, Cayuga, ON and aunts, uncles, cousins and friends all over the world. Maggie loved her family above all else and was a dedicated wife and mother. In the last few weeks before her death she devoted her time to writing journals to her children and letters to her family. She was an avid learner and had a natural curiosity that led her through life. Maggie loved formal education and possessed an Hon. BA in English & History, an MA in History, a Master of Library and Information Studies and, most recently, an Advanced Diploma in Public Relations. She always said that she would be happiest enrolled in school forever. For many years, she worked as a professional librarian and researcher. She was on the verge of making a fresh start in PR when her illness struck. She was a constant reader, an ever-present pile of books beside her bed. Her favourite authors ranged from Gabriel Garcia Marquez to Terry Pratchett, but she would read absolutely anything. She often joked that one of her legacies to the kids was a fully stocked library with everything from classic literature to pulp fiction. Maggie had a great respect for writing and often regretted not committing more to paper. She adored entertaining and cooking and most weekend afternoons were spent in the kitchen with a new or favourite recipe. Maggie loved to talk domestic and world politics and followed the news like a hawk. She always wished she had traveled more but was thrilled with the small trips her and Mark made throughout the Maritimes. A short visitation in Maggie’s honour will be held at Atlantic Funeral Homes between 7-9pm on September 14, 771 Main Street, Dartmouth. In lieu of flowers, donations to the IWK in Maggie’s name or donations to Daphne and Lachlan’s education are most welcome (contact Mark). Please raise a glass in Maggie’s memory.
