Joyce Farrell
November 23, 1956 - April 2, 2016
Farrell, Joyce Marie – age 59 of Halifax passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Saturday, April 2, 2016 in the Halifax Infirmary, QE II. Born in Halifax, she was the daughter of Lucille (DesRoches) of Dartmouth and the late Colin S. Farrell. Joyce had a special way of making all those around her feel loved, appreciated and special. She shared her gifts of humor, grace and compassion with all who knew her and was a pillar of strength that brought family together. Family was everything to Joyce, she lovingly raised two children who gave her three granddaughters; becoming “Nanny J” to “her girls” was truly her life’s calling. Joyce shared an unbreakable bond with her siblings, and will live on in the hearts of the “Fabulous Farrells”, especially her “womb sister”. Joyce had a special way of bringing them together, even in her final days. Joyce also shared many special friendships with her soul sisters, believing that friends are the family we choose for ourselves. Although Joyce’s time here was too short she lived her life to the fullest, never missing an opportunity for celebration or adventure. She and her devoted husband Brian shared a love for travel, visiting many parts of the world together. They shared a particular fondness for Scotland and Joyce was truly at home wherever there was a warm beach where she could swim. Joyce devoted 40 years to her career in accounting; an occupation that she truly loved. She maintained many lifelong relationships with her colleagues, as a mentor and friend. Joyce is survived by her husband, Brian Smith; daughter, Natasha Gibb (Andrew), Dartmouth; son, Mark Winters (Amy), Calgary; grandchildren, Stella Joy Gibb, Claire Elizabeth Winters, Pippa Dillon Gibb; sisters, Colleen Farrell (Alan Bailey), Michele Farrell, Judy Lemieux (Yves), Debbie Warren (John); brother, Colin Farrell (Lisa); brothers in law, Jack Smith (Jean), Charles Smith, James Smith (Jane); sister in law, Tish Deemer (Lyle) as well as many cherished nieces and nephews.
