MONTGOMERY, John Wayne, 66 - After a courageous battle with cancer,
Wayne passed away peacefully on Wednesday July 17, 2013 at home surrounded by his loving family.
Through this difficult journey, Wayne taught us all a lesson in living and in dying. Through his inner strength, his endurance and his willingness to laugh, he embraced each day with hope. He took pleasure in the little things and in the love, loyalty and support of his family and friends. Wayne never looked at the last years of his life as dying with cancer but rather as living with it. He was admired and an inspiration, simply for the man he was and who he became through this process.
A salesman throughout most of his working years, Wayne spent the last 25 years in the RV business which he loved. He loved the customers he had, the people he worked with and the relationships he made along the way. He loved Friday golf games or any golf game for that matter and his Thursday nights with the "Boys". In most recent years Wayne enjoyed his time spent in PEI and the cherished memories made with his Bride and his brother and sister in law Don and Theresa Brown.
Wayne was the son of, and predeceased by, the late Joseph and Dorothy (Gallant) Montgomery.
Missed, but loved dearly, Wayne is survived by his loving Bride of 37 years Beth (Keohan). He was the proud father of his children; daughter Nicole (John) of Beaver Bank and his sons Joey of Halifax and Chad of Calgary. He was Grampy to his special granddaughter Mackenzie and grandsons Brayden, Reid, Trevor and Colin and his grand dog Waffle. Wayne is also survived by his caring step mom, Brenda, Dartmouth; his beloved little sisters, Joy, Halifax and Darlene (Michael), Clarence; his big brother, whom he always looked up to, Bernie (Jeanette), Halifax; mother –in-law, Elizabeth Keohan; in-laws, Theresa (Don) Brown, Dartmouth, Pat Keohan, Halifax, Rob (Kim) Keohan, Edmonton, Alb., Barry (Linda) Keohan, Oakville, Ont., as well as many nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, Wayne was predeceased by father –in-law, John Keohan and brother-in-law, Brian Keohan. There have been many friends and colleagues and extended family that have supported Wayne and his family through his ordeal and we thank them all. The family would especially like to thank Susan Turner of the VON and Glenna Thornhill of Palliative Care for their care and support of Wayne and his family which allowed Wayne's journey to end at home as he so wanted.
A service to celebrate Wayne's life will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday July 23 at Atlantic Funeral Home, 771 Main St., Dartmouth. Interment will follow in Dartmouth Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Canadian cancer society, the Palliative care unit at the VG or VON Canada.
