John Randles
September 4, 1922 - September 2, 2014
With sadness but with grateful hearts we announce the passing of our father and patriarch, John Allison Randles on Sept.2 surrounded by his loving family, Dad passed peacefully just two days shy of his 92nd birthday. Born in Saint John,N.B., Dad was the eldest child of the late William and Mary Randles. Upon finishing high school, he enlisted in the RCAF during the Second World War and while posted in Montreal he met the love of his life, Eileen Bishop at a dance. After their marriage, they settled in Saint John where he began a long career in the tire industry beginning as a salesman in 1946 for BFGoodrich Tire Company. Subsequent to his promotion to store manager, he was transferred to Moncton,N.B. as the Atlantic Provinces District Manager in 1956. In 1962 Dad accepted the challenge of becoming his own boss and became owner of Town Tire Services Ltd. in Dartmouth,N.S. He grew this business into one of the largest independent tire dealerships and retreading production facilities in Atlantic Canada.”We retread them all....The big and the small!” was an apt slogan for a company retreading everything from 9 inch tires for forklifts to 9 foot tires for mining and road building equipment. He was an active member of the Dartmouth Chamber of Commerce, Atlantic Provinces Tire Dealers and Retreaders Association, a Life Member of the Maritime Commercial Traveler’s, and a 32nd degree mason in the Scottish Rite. Retiring in 1981, Mom and Dad enjoyed many wonderful winters at beautiful Isla del Sol in St. Petersburg, Florida where they had many friends from all over North America.
Dad had a lifelong love affair with sports, with golf, hockey, and baseball at the forefront. He began caddying at Riverside Country Club for 25 cents a round and a few years later became the junior club champion and later the first 2 time Saint John City and District Champion. During his 6 years as a member of Moncton Golf and Country Club, he won the club championship and was runner-up twice. After moving to Dartmouth he became a member of Brightwood and Ashburn golf clubs until his passing. He was the founding president of the Maritime Pre Senior Golf Association and past president of the Maritime Seniors Golf Association and Brightwood Golf and Country Club. A shrewd negotiator on the first tee, he collected more than a few quarters while creating wonderful friendships with golfers of all ages throughout his life.He was an ardent fan of the Tampa Bay Lightning and the Toronto Blue Jays, smiling with every win and analyzing and shaking his head with each defeat....Heaven only knows how many Stanley Cups and World Series championships they would have won with Dad as their GM!
Dad had a very special and unique relationship with each of his children and always provided support and necessary guidance in our various endeavors. He was very proud of and much loved by all his grandchildren and great grandchildren , and followed their activities with great interest while providing invaluable wisdom. A long time member of St. James United Church in Dartmouth, Dad was predeceased by Eileen in 2001 and sons in law David Stephens and Brian Cox, as well as his younger siblings Evelyn, Helen, Audrey, and Bill. He is survived by his special friend Faby Gagnon and his children, Penny (Paul Davis), Patsy Cox, John (Judi) Randles, Susan (Chris Jauer) and Charlie (Sharon) Randles; his beloved grandchildren, Kasandra (Dan) and Julian, Greg (Kim)and Julia (Sean), Tim (Priscilla), Jeremy (Melissa)and Joe (Marielle), Evan and Lauren, Scott and Alyson; and great grandchildren, Monica, Claire, Jake and Amelia.
The family would like to express special thanks to VON, RJF Homecare, Integrated Palliative Care Service, and extra special thanks to Dr. William Lee, Dr. Duane Sheppard, Sharon Randles and Janice Fougere for all their professional and personal support. The incredible efforts of all of these people were instrumental in helping Dad fulfill his wish to remain in his home.
