GREENE, John Patrick (Jack)

Age 83, Dartmouth, NS. Passed away peacefully Saturday, January 31, 2015, after a long battle with leukemia. Born in St. John’s, NL, Jack started a 50 year career with the CIBC, the longest service record in the Maritimes, at age 16. He began postings with increasing responsibility throughout the Atlantic Provinces eventually becoming Manager of all Dartmouth CIBC branches and then Credit Inspector at the Halifax headquarters. With a keen eye for business development, Jack was known as “The Banker’s Banker” and was responsible for funding many well-known businesses and allowing Maritime entrepreneurs to compete on the Canadian stage. Jack later established the CIBC RIF program for Nova Scotia and helped hundreds of clients ensure prosperous retirements.

A competitive athlete in his earlier years, Jack won the famous St. John’s Regatta and was a regular contender for the Newfoundland curling title with his Grand Falls team. An avid fisherman, he was responsible for organizing many legendary fresh and saltwater trips that friends and relatives still recount today. Jack also had a lifelong obsession with his beloved NY Yankees.

For many years, Jack volunteered to take care of all accounting for the Grand Falls diocese of the Catholic Church and his efforts were recognized with a Papal medal. He was also a founding member of the Rotary Club in Grand Falls.

He is survived by his wife of 58 years Elsie (Huggard), sons Michael (Jannette) and Matthew (Lettie McNeil), daughter Meredith (Scot Burton) and grandson Patrick. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews and their families throughout the Maritimes and New England. He was predeceased by his siblings Rose, Patsy and Ed. Jack’s dry sense of humour will be sorely missed by all who knew him.

The family would like to acknowledge the tireless, compassionate service of the Dartmouth General staff, the hematology staff at the QEII, and the excellent home care of the VON nurses.

A Celebration of Life reception will take place on Saturday, February 7, 2 - 4pm at the Atlantic Funeral Home, 771 Main Street, Dartmouth. Family flowers only. Donations in Jack’s memory can be made to the Dartmouth General Foundation Fund or the VON.

Online condolences may be made by visiting the Dartmouth Chapel at www.atlanticfuneralhomes.com
