<div itemprop="description">FITZGERALD, John James, 85, Dartmouth, passed away peacefully December 3, 2014 at Melville Lodge, Halifax. Born in South Harbour, Victoria County, Cape Breton, he was the son of the late Stephen Robert and Mary Effie Fitzgerald. John worked his career of 45 years as a heavy machinery operator. He retired from Dunphy Bro Construction on Lake Major Rd, Dartmouth at the age of 65. John enjoyed cutting and piling his wood (and everyone else&rsquo;s if he had the chance!) for the woodstove to heat his house, working on cars for family and friends, spending time with his family teaching Nancy, Kyle and Wavey &ldquo;his way&rdquo; of fixing things. Left to mourn are his wife of 62 years Sophie (Dixon) Fitzgerald, daughter Nancy Fitzgerald ( Don Willits ); the apples of his eye, grandson Kyle (Michele Savoury and, great grandson James Michael Savoury- Boland. He is also survived by brother Michael, Dartmouth, Brian (Rose), Truro; sisters Margaret Williams (Albert), Ingonish, Julia Daisley (Raymond), Dartmouth; several nieces and nephews; his special daughter Wavey Squires, special son Brian Squires and their children Jake and Sarah. He was predeceased by his parents, sisters Josephine Burton, Mary Julia and Priscilla, brothers Allister Fitzgerald, Stanley Fitzgerald. Visitation will be held in Atlantic Funeral Home, 771 Main Street Dartmouth on Monday December 8th from 2-4 and 6-8. A Funeral Mass will be held 10 am Tuesday, December 9th from Immaculate conception Church, Pleasant Street, Woodside. A reception will follow in the church hall. All are welcome to join the family at Dartmouth Memorial Gardens to lay John to rest.
