John Daniel Power
June 19, 1951 - March 21, 2016
POWER, John Daniel, 64 years of age, passed away peacefully on March 21, 2016 surrounded by family following a courageous battle with esophageal cancer. Born in Halifax to John Leonard Power and Rita Marie Carroll, John was a graduate of St. Peter’s High School in Dartmouth. He went on to obtain his Bachelor of Arts degree in 1972 and his Bachelor of Education degree in 1973, both from St. Mary’s University. John loved to teach and he enjoyed working with young people at Ellenvale Junior High, John Martin Junior High and Prince Arthur Junior High.
Undeniably, John’s other passion was sports. He was a talented athlete both as a youngster, when he played hockey, baseball, basketball and tennis and into his adulthood, as he continued to enjoy tennis and picked up golf. He was a passionate coach, most notably basketball, and a well-respected minor basketball official. He is a former President and lifelong member of St. George’s Tennis Club in Dartmouth.
Despite his passion for competition, John was a kind, patient and gentle man. He had a strong sense of justice but remained compassionate in his dealings with others at all times. He had a dry sense of humour and enjoyed making people laugh.
John will be dearly missed by his loving wife, Marion (Croft) and their children Mark (Alanna) and Karen and there is no doubt that he will be watching over his beloved granddaughter, Kaleigh. In addition to his parents, John was predeceased by an infant daughter, Kelly. He will be remembered fondly by his brothers, Paddy (Bev), Jerry (Mary) and sister, Janet (Gilles Tremblay) and many extended family members and friends.
Join with family and friends to celebrate a life well-lived at the Waegwoltic Club, 6549 Coburg Rd., Halifax, NS on Saturday, March 26, 2016 from 2-5 pm. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the QEII Foundation (esophageal cancer).
Online condolences may be made by visiting the Dartmouth Chapel at www.atlanticfuneralhomes.com
