James Gordon Buchanan, "Gordon", of Dartmouth, aged 69, died peacefully surrounded by his family, after a brief illness, on October 27th, 2013.

Gordon considered himself the luckiest of men to be Maureen's husband, father to the best daughters, Jyl and Karey, father-in-law to terrific sons-in-law, Chuck and Eric, and grandfather to the most amazing grandchildren, Justin, Alex, and Charlotte.

Gordon's glass was never less than three quarters full, despite significant health challenges over the past 20 years. Ever a larger-than-life character, Gordon always lived in a world of superlatives. His rib crushing hugs were legendary, as was his smile and booming laugh. He never feared telling his truth, most importantly, that he loved you.

Gordon was a passionate man - about sailing, dogs, politics, football, business, scotch, and most of all, his family. The much loved son of the late Sadie (MacLean) and James Buchanan of New Waterford, Gordon attended St. Francis Xavier University (BA 1967) and Dal (BEd 1970). Teaching led to business where Gordon found and pursued his professional passion in real estate development for many years.

He is survived by his wife, Maureen (née Dillon), daughters Jyl Lienaux (Bedford) and Karey Robb (Toronto), sons-in-law Chuck Lienaux and Eric Robb, and grandchildren Justin and Alex Lienaux and Charlotte Robb. His life was richer for his great friendships with David Parsons, Peter MacSween (deceased), Vincent (Topper) MacDonald, and his brothers-in-law Ed MacAulay, Doug Rose, and Barry Turner, sisters-in-law Sheila MacAulay, Ruth Dillon Rose, and Lois Dillon, nieces and nephews Christy and Andrew MacAulay, Rebecca and Catherine Rose, and Matthew and Laura Turner. Gordon truly valued his many friendships including extended family among the Buchanans, MacLeans, MacEacherns, Dillons, and MacAulays.

Following Gordon's wishes, there will be a funeral mass held at St. Leonard's Catholic Church (formerly Mount Carmel Church) in New Waterford on Friday, November 1st at 1pm, followed by a reception at Saint Leonard Parish Hall, 310 Convent Street, New Waterford. Interment at Oakville Cemetery, Mira. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the charity of your choice. Online condolences may be made by visiting: www.atlanticfuneralhomes.com , Dartmouth Chapel.
