<div itemprop="description">Long time, well respected member of the Dartmouth business community. <br> <br>Ivan L Forbes, 93, passed away peacefully on February 28, with his loving wife by his side. Born in Fredericton, NB; he was the son of the late James E. and Irene Forbes (nee McKeill). He served in the Royal Canadian Navy during WWII, 18 months in Corvettes in the North Atlantic and Minesweepers and Corvettes for 20 months in the Pacific. During that time he met his wife Lea in Victoria and married in February 1945 returning to Fredericton in November of 1945 where he worked for J Clark & Sons while studying accounting with the Certified General Accounting Society. <br> <br>They moved to Dartmouth in 1967 and purchased the former Teasdale and Foote Chevrolet dealership thus founding Forbes Chevrolet which moved to new facilities on Portland Street in 1971. A prominent and well respected Dartmouth businessman; he was active in many community and business activities for the Halifax Dartmouth Automobile Association as President, and in 1981 -1982 and served as President of the Canadian Automobile Dealers Association. He was an avid sports enthusiast curling in four national championships. He was a founding member of the Capital Winter Club in Fredericton and served as a former president. He was a member of Somme Branch of the Royal Canadian Legion, a life member of both the Dartmouth and Dartmouth East Rotary Club and as an avid golfer was a member of Brightwood Golf and Country Club and a member of both the Maritime Senior Golf Association and the Atlantic Senior Golf Association. <br> <br>He always had time to stop and talk with anyone who wanted his advice or opinion and he will be fondly remembered for his humanitarian qualities, sense of humour, loyalty and deep love of family. <br> <br>He is survived by his devoted wife of 72 years, Lea; sons Patrick and wife Susan, Gary and wife Verna; grandsons Ivan and wife Shelley, S. Patrick and wife Jennifer; great grandchildren Kyle, Emily and Ashlin. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family and was predeceased by his brother Ronald; sisters Alberta and Winnie. <br> <br>As per Ivan’s request, cremation has taken place and there will be a private family gathering at a later date. The family wishes to thank all of those who cared for him over the last months and especially those who took time over the years to touch and enrich his life in so many special ways.
