Issam Salloum
May 24, 1943 - February 23, 2015
SALLOUM, Issam Elias “Sam”
After a courageous and admirable battle with lung cancer, Sam passed away peacefully at his home on Monday, February 23, 2015, surrounded by his loved ones.
Born in Lebanon on May 24th, 1943, he was the son of the late Father Elias and Minerva (Dib) Salloum.
He is survived by his loving wife of 49 years, Kathlyn “Ginger,” son David (Sandra) of Trinidad, daughter Leigh-Ann (Tony) Aalders of Hubley, and son Paul of Halifax. “Jido” will be sadly missed by his beloved grandchildren Celina and Connor Aalders, whom he adored and of whom he was very proud.
Sam is also survived by brothers Victor (Angela) of Lebanon and Adnan (Haifa) of Victoria, BC, sisters Evelyn (Zake, deceased) Habib of Timberlea, Malvina (George) Dib of Lebanon, and Siham (Elias) Abdullah of Lebanon, and many loving cousins, nephews, nieces, brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law. He was predeceased by his brother Rajah (Yvette) of Dartmouth.
Sam emigrated from Lebanon to Trinidad & Tobago in 1959 to seek greater opportunity. In 1965, he moved to Toronto to marry his sweetheart Ginger. He and his family lived in Barbados and Lebanon before immigrating to Dartmouth in 1976. Sam was the owner-operator of several successful businesses, including Lads & Lassies children's shoe store in MicMac Mall and Sub Fair restaurant in Maritime Centre.
Sam was a kind, hard-working, fun-loving man who liked to tell and listen to stories and jokes. After many years of hard work, he proudly retired to the comfort of his home, where he enjoyed the company of family and friends who visited. He was an avid gardener and a jack of all trades, who impressed many with his inventions.
Sam will be fondly missed and remembered.
Thank you to the kind doctors, nurses, and all staff on Floor 3 West at the Dartmouth General Hospital, the VON and palliative care support team, and to all doctors and caregivers who helped him along his journey.
In lieu of flowers, donations on behalf of Issam Salloum may be made via www.terryfox.org or www.saintantonios.ca.
