Gordon Lothian
January 13, 1927 - April 9, 2014
With sorrow we announce the passing of Gordon Donald Lothian, 87, of Dartmouth. After a long and hard-fought struggle, Gord died peacefully at home holding the hand of his dear wife, Sylvia, and surrounded by friends and family. He is survived by his wife Sylvia (Conrad) and his children; James (Marina) Lothian, Dartmouth, Mike (Cindy)Lothian, Burlington, ON, Wendy (Steve)Taylor,Dartmouth, Tracey Lothian Lunenburg, and youngest Melissa (Ed)Lower, Clayton, North Carolina; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. With help from family members and the Palliative Care team, his final months were spent lovingly tended by his eldest daughter who made his passage from this world a dignified and caring one. As a young man, Gord joined the army briefly, and before he was sent into action, the second world war ended and he became a navy man for a period of 21 years. He finished out his working days as a civilian at the DND for another 21 years. Despite spending many months away from home at a time, dad managed to produce a good-sized family with Sylvia. He was a genuine family-man and loved being involved in their activities, never failing to help out when called upon. Until very recently, Gord was always physically active, as a younger man practicing many sports like football, hockey, cross-country skiing, and later enjoying a vigorous social life involving pool, bowling and, most of all, golf. The Brightwood Golf and Country Club was privileged to have him as a member for 55 years. He had a belly-laugh that could rattle the walls and a wry sense of humour that lasted until the very end. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service to celebrate his life will be held at the Atlantic Funeral Home, 771 Main Street, Dartmouth on Monday, April 14th at 11:00. Reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent to the SPCA or The Nova Scotia Hospice Palliative Care Association.
