<div itemprop="description"> <p> <b> <u> George Innes Turnbull (1944-2012) </u> </b> </p> <p> &nbsp; </p> <p> It is with profound sadness we announce the passing of George Turnbull on March 7th, 2012 at the Victoria General Hospital, Halifax, NS, at the age of 67.&nbsp;&nbsp; George passed away peacefully with his family by his side. </p> <p> &nbsp; </p> <p> George was born in Edinburgh, Scotland in 1944.&nbsp; He was predeceased by his parents George and Agnes and his sister, Isabella.&nbsp; George is survived by his beloved wife, Renee, children, Peter (Tammy), Robert, and Lara Hartley (Lynn), Lake Jackson, Texas, granddaughter Charlotte, stepsons Marc and Joshua Henderson and step grandson, Cody Small.&nbsp; </p> <p> &nbsp; </p> <p> He received his physiotherapy education in Glasgow, Scotland, and, after periods of clinical practice in Britain and Zimbabwe, he completed the Diploma of Teachers of Physiotherapy in Aberdeen, Scotland. George lived in Rhodesia (Zimbabwe) 1968 &ndash; 1973 and emigrated to Winnipeg, Canada (University of Manitoba) in 1976.&nbsp; He obtained a Bachelor of Physical Therapy while teaching both physical and occupational therapy students at the University of Manitoba.&nbsp; He then accepted a faculty position at Dalhousie University, Halifax, NS in 1979 and earned a Master of Arts degree in the areas of psychomotor learning and motor control. From 1991-1992, he was the Chair, Department of Physical Therapy, University South Alabama before returning to Dalhousie University. &nbsp;In 1994 he received his PhD in Human Movement Studies from Rhodes University, South Africa. George was a full Professor, School of Physiotherapy and Professor, Faculty of Graduate Studies at Dalhousie University and for the last ten years of his career was the Associate Dean, Research &amp; Academic, Faculty of Health Professions. </p> <p> &nbsp; </p> <p> George was known for his compassion. He believed that we are all expected to serve and his life exemplified that. George was committed throughout his life to helping others especially those with Parkinson&rsquo;s Disease.&nbsp; He had a wonderful sense of humor and his many interests included basketball, soccer, photography, cooking and travelling the world.&nbsp;&nbsp; Above all else, George loved his family dearly and leaves them with many cherished memories. </p> <p> &nbsp; </p> <p> The family wishes to thank the VON and all staff on the 6th Floor, VG Hospital.&nbsp; </p> <p> &nbsp; </p> <p> Visitation will be held on Sunday, March 11 from 2-4 and 7-9 pm in Atlantic Funeral Home 771 Main Street, Dartmouth. Funeral service will be held on Monday, March 12th at 11:00 am &nbsp;at Iona Presbyterian Church, 90 Lucien Drive, Dartmouth, &nbsp;Rev. Dr. Cynthia Chenard officiating. Reception&nbsp; to follow in the church hall.
