Frederick Joyce
November 1, 1925 - August 24, 2013
It is with great sadness that Fred’s family announces his passing at the Admiral Long Term Care Facility on Saturday, August 24, 2013. Born on November 1, 1925 in Chatham Ontario, he was the son of the late Alfred and Esther (Shakespeare) Joyce.
He was a Medical Laboratory Technologist, and served in the Medical Branch of the Royal Canadian Navy in Halifax for over twenty years, retiring in 1971. He then worked for the Provincial Government in the Clinical Chemistry Division of the Pathology Institute in Halifax from where he retired in 1986. He was also an accomplished amateur nature photographer and a member of the Photographic Guild of Nova Scotia. Having been recently honored by the Guild for serving over fifty years of membership, he was highly regarded as a mentor and inspiration for the younger members. Some of his photographic work was featured in a photographic journal book entitled “Nova Scotia” (Text by Harry Bruce, Publisher Anthony Hawke,) in 1975. He also combined his photographic talents with his medical knowledge, and was a part of a “Medical Expedition to Easter Island” in 1965. In addition to his contributions to the lab work being done on the expedition, he also took many slide photographs which he later compiled and presented as a slide show/essay which was of great interest in the local community.
He met his wife (Betty Dakin) in Cornwallis in 1949 where he was in Basic Training, and she was working as a Civil Servant. He was very proud of his family and of the accomplishments of each of his children and grandchildren. He and Betty were married for over fifty-four years, until her passing in 2005. He is survived by son Jim (Jillian Dominey and their son Ryan); daughter Sharon (Ian Whitehouse, and children Mark, Shannon and Christine); son Tom and daughter in law Darlene Joyce (their daughters Kimberly and Lori); and daughter Linda (Deb Scott). Also surviving is brother; Alfred, and sisters; Mary Reddick and Betty Jordan. He was predeceased by brothers Tom and Jim, and by sister; Evelyn Hebbert, as well as by granddaughter Lisa Joyce.
The family would like to express special thanks and appreciation to the Staff at the Admiral Long Term Care Facility for their compassion and care.
There will be no visitation by family request. The service will be held on Tuesday, August 27 at 1:00 p.m. in Atlantic Funeral Home, 771 Main Street, Dartmouth , with Rev. Hugh McKervill officiating. Donations can be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation, or to the Canadian Cancer Society. Online condolences may be by visiting www.atlanticfuneralhomes.com (Dartmouth Chapel)
