It is with heart felt sadness, I announce that my Mother passed away January 14, 2015. These last few years she struggled with dementia.
Mom and her twin Arthur were born in Baddeck on September 24, 1933. The daughter of the late Laurence and Helen (Patten) Gates. She was predeceased by her brothers, Peter (in infancy), Arthur (her twin) and Clayton Gates; her son Peter and husband Paul Hare.
She is survived by her daughter, Paula Hare; her sister, Muriel Eisener; her brother, David Gates; and several nieces and nephews.
Mom lived an interesting and varied life. She was an artist, an astrologer, and very much about family.
She loved painting and design. She created warm, welcoming, beautiful homes in every house we lived in… there were many. Her love of family was evident and I have wonderful memories of all the family gatherings we had. Animals were always welcome in our home. In these last years her beloved cat Fanny was her constant companion.
As a young woman, she was a Red Cross nurse; later in life she was an artist, and an astrologer. As an artist, her paintings quite often depicted the things she loved and the beauty she saw around her. In her career as an astrologer, she was often interviewed by the media, she sometimes was asked to assist the police and she helped many people throughout her career. She was mentioned in several books and documentaries; the book Evelyn’s Guiding Stars was written about her early life and career.
Funeral arrangements and cremation have been entrusted to Atlantic Funeral Homes. The funeral service will take place on Wednesday January 21st at 1pm in Atlantic Funeral Home, 771 Main Street, Dartmouth, Rev. James Haughn officiating. Reception to follow. Burial in Oakridge Memory Gardens, Middle Sackville.
Mom’s favourite quote was “to thine own self be true” and she followed this motto throughout her life and career.
When you look at the stars think of her.
In lieu of flowers a donation may be made in her name to the charity of your choice. Online condolences may be made by visiting www.atlanticfuneralhomes.com, Dartmouth Chapel
