<div itemprop="description"> <p> Ernest William <b> &ldquo; </b> <b> Bill&rdquo; </b> Shellnutt BComm; CMA; PA; AMP, <b> Accountant and local businessman </b> age 65 of Dartmouth died peacefully, surrounded by family, on March 9th, 2012 at the Dartmouth General Hospital ending his battle with cancer. </p> <p> &nbsp; </p> <p> Born in Halifax on February 1st, 1947 Bill was the second son of Ernest George and Peggy (MacLellan) Shellnutt. </p> <p> &nbsp; </p> <p> Bill grew up in Halifax, Cornwallis (Annapolis Co.) and Dartmouth, Nova Scotia.&nbsp; At the age of 14 he became a Queen Scout and soon after that a Sea Cadet and member of the &ldquo;Woodlawn Hi-Cs&rdquo;.&nbsp; He was an alter boy at St. Luke&rsquo;s Anglican Church.&nbsp; His first job was as a Halifax Mail Star carrier.&nbsp; Bill and his brothers and sisters spent childhood summers at their cottage in Mill Cove, St. Margaret&rsquo;s Bay. Bill enjoyed swimming and tuna fishing with his brother Wayne and local fishermen. </p> <p> &nbsp; </p> <p> Bill graduated from Prince Andrew High School in Dartmouth in 1965 and completed his Bachelor of Commerce degree in 1969 where he enjoyed accounting, philosophy and playing hockey.&nbsp; After graduation Bill entered the Canadian Forces as a direct entry officer, commissioned as a Lieutenant where he spent a short time before deciding to move to Montreal to work for Murphy Oil as Financial Accounting Advisor.&nbsp; He returned to Halifax where he became Administrative Manager at the Halifax Housing Authority.&nbsp; </p> <p> &nbsp; </p> <p> Bill eventually decided to go into business for himself.&nbsp; During his years of self-employment, he obtained a Certified Management Accountant designation, and owned and operated several businesses. &nbsp;Most notable is his accounting firm, Bill Shellnutt &amp; Associates Limited (Est. 1973) currently located in Russell Lake in Dartmouth where it continues to operate.&nbsp; Bill was also co-owner of Shellnutt&rsquo;s Esso in Cole Harbour with his brother Jim.&nbsp;&nbsp; </p> <p> &nbsp; </p> <p> Bill is survived by wife Joan of more than 41 years, sons Michael (Denise) and Gregory, Taipei, Taiwan; brothers Wayne (Ingrid), Jim, Phillip (Janet); sisters Nancy (Stewart) Garrison, Brenda (Henneberry) Haight; beloved grandchildren Benjamin, Olivia, Samuel and many nieces and nephews.&nbsp; He was predeceased by his mother Peggy and sister Barbara (Charlie) Dixon. </p> <p> &nbsp; </p> <p> Our family would like to thank Dr. MacLennan, other doctors, nurses and staff at Dartmouth General Hospital for providing comfort and hope to Bill, family and friends. </p> <p> &nbsp; </p> <p> Visitation will be held at 2 &ndash; 4 pm and 7 &ndash; 9 pm Thursday, March 15th at Atlantic Funeral Homes located on 771 Main Street in Dartmouth.&nbsp; Funeral will be held Friday, March 16th at St. Luke&rsquo;s Anglican church on Veteran&rsquo;s Avenue in Dartmouth at 1 pm&nbsp; Rev. Canon Carolyn Tomlin officiating.&nbsp; Reception to follow at Atlantic Funeral Home. </p> <p> &nbsp; </p> <p> Family flowers only.&nbsp; In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or the Canadian Liver Foundation. </p> <p> &nbsp; </p> <p> &nbsp; </p> </div>
