
Elsie Viola Bernard
Passed away peacefully at the QEII Health Sciences Centre (Halifax Infirmary), in Halifax, Nova Scotia, on Sunday December 2nd, 2012, at the age of 93. Born on October 14th, 1919, in the community of Lake Loon, Halifax County, she was the daughter of the late John and Eliza (Wyse/Drummond) Sparks. She was raised on Montague Rd. with five sisters – Edna, Alfreda, Verna, Lillian and Myrtle; and four brothers – Frank, Howard, Everett, and Clifford, all deceased.
She was predeceased by her husband of 53 years, George Edward Bernard. She is survived by her dedicated family. Seven daughters - Vera Sewell (Newton) Toronto; Marion Mulder (Donald), Dartmouth; Linda Jackson (Charles-deceased), Hammonds Plains; Camilla Watkins (Walter), Vancouver; Sherleen, Dartmouth; Delvina (Dr. Harvey Millar), Halifax; and Kimberley, Halifax; And foster daughter Trudy Talbot, Toronto. Two sons: George Jr. (Dr. Wanda Thomas), Dartmouth; and Garry (Carla), Dartmouth. She will be deeply missed by her 20 grandchildren, ages 10 – 47 years. 21 great grandmother, and was blessed with 4 great great grandchildren and 5 Godchildren. She was a loving aunt to many dedicated nieces, nephews, and their families.
She was married in 1941 and over the decades made a wonderful homelife for her children. Always leading by example, her faith in God and deep spiritual beliefs have been the foundation upon which she based her life lessons of: truthfulness, honesty fairness, being humble and of good character - which she readily imparted to her children, grandchildren and young people in her community. She was a founding member of the Cherry Brook Baptist Church Women’s Missionary Society, and in her early years served as secretary of the Lake Loon Development Association. She was deservedly loved, respected, and honoured as a strong, courageous, wise, and proud community elder - who will be deeply missed by many.
The family will welcome friends at the Atlantic Funeral Home 771 Main Street, Dartmouth, for a Tribute Service hosted by Cherry Brook Baptist Church Women’s Missionary Society on Friday December 7th, 2012, 7 – 9 PM. A funeral service will be held on Saturday December 8th, 2012 at 2:00PM, at the Atlantic Funeral Home. Repast reception to follow at the funeral home.
The family would like to extend their gratitude to the many cousins, friends, and family members; As well as deacons, pastors, and members of the African United Baptist Church family for their years of dedicated visits with our mother at her care home. We extend a special thank you to her many caregivers at Parkland Care Centre in Clayton Park and the nursing and medical staff at the Halifax Infirmary.
In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Cherry Brook Baptist Church Women’s Missionary Society or a charity of one’s choice. Interment will take place at Dartmouth Memorial Gardens on Tuesday December 11th at 1pm.
