He was a graduate of Regis High School, St. Peter’s College, and Princeton University (USA) with further studies at the University of Strasbourg (France) and the Hague Academy of International Law (Netherlands). A dedicated teacher, he held faculty positions at Haile Selassie University (Ethiopia), the University of Washington (USA), as well as Universities of Guelph, McMaster, Dalhousie University, and Acadia University from which he retired in 2000.
He is survived by his wife, Carol O’Neil; their daughter Julia Rose O’Neil Grady; son-in-law, Glenn Patriquin; grandsons, Elliot Noah and Nathaniel James (Halifax); sister, Geraldine Lang-Sullivan (Babylon, NY); and her children, Michael (Fiona), Mary Paige (Charles), and James (Cathy); as well as sisters- and brothers-in law and many grandnieces and grandnephews. He was predeceased by his parents and nephews, Robert and Gerard Lang.
Don strove to help his students gain an understanding of our world and their place in it so that they would have the knowledge, skills, and motivation to work for positive change in their communities, workplaces, institutions, and governments. He was himself active throughout his life in the pursuit of a better world through his involvement in the US civil rights movement and a variety of citizens’ organizations working to protect and improve our communities, natural environment, and political decision-making processes.
His love of music was a large part of his life and while classical music played a central role he was ever expanding his knowledge and appreciation of music of all kinds and from all parts of the world.
He was a loving and much-loved member of our family and will be remembered by us and his friends for his kindness, loyalty, and fierce determination to fight injustice.
Visitation will be held Sunday, August 2, 2015 from 2-4 and 7-9 pm in Atlantic Funeral Home, 771 Main Street, Dartmouth.
Funeral service will be held Monday, August 3 at 10:00 am in the Atlantic Funeral Home Chapel with a reception to follow.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Scholarships and Financial Aid Fund at Acadia University, Office of Advancement, 15 University Avenue, Wolfville, NS, B4P 2R6.
Online condolences may be made by visiting the Dartmouth Chapel at www.atlanticfuneralhomes.com
