Clare Mitchell
November 19, 1931 - March 20, 2016
Clare passed away peacefully on March 20, 2016, aged 84. He was a sailor, a fisherman, a storyteller, and a cherished friend. Clare was a twenty-five year veteran of the Canadian Armed Forces, which provided him with hours of stories from his time at sea. Clare was also a lifelong member of the Masonic Lodge, in Nova Scotia, and in later years a member of the Sahib Shriner’s in Sarasota Florida.
Those who knew him will remember his love of salmon fishing along the Margaree River. Taught to fish at an early age by his father, William, Clare was a master at fly tying and spent hours creating the perfect bait flies to land the best salmon supper for his family and friends. For many years Clare served as a tour guide for fishing enthusiasts from around the world.
During his retirement, Clare enjoyed daily walks, swimming, and sharing the camaraderie of friendships new and old, while perfecting his game of shuffleboard on the courts along Florida’s Gulf Coast.
Predeceased by his beloved wife Linda Marlene, and his siblings Lowis, George and Donald. Clare will be dearly missed by his family; daughters, Joanne Elizabeth (David), Edmonton, AB, and Tamatha Lynn, Calgary, AB; grandchildren Adam and Amanda (Stephen); great granddaughter Anja; sister-in-law, Janet; nephew, Andrew; niece, Victoria and great nephew, Jonathan. Clare will also be missed by his many friends throughout Nova Scotia, and in Sarasota, Florida, his winter residence for over 25 years.
The family wishes to acknowledge and thank all those who comforted Clare on his final journey with their unwavering support, entertainment, and compassion – with particular thanks to the loving care of Rose Hanlon-Mariotti, and the nursing staff at Queen Elizabeth II, Halifax, NS.
In lieu of flowers, Clare would encourage you to raise a glass of your favourite spirit with your family and friends and make a toast to the best of times, “Chinchín!” If you'd prefer, donations can be made in Clare's memory to Canadian Cancer Society.
Visitation to be held from 7-9pm Friday, March 25 with a Celebration of Clare's Life 9:30am Saturday, March 26 both in Atlantic Funeral Home located at 771 Main Street, Dartmouth. Interment to follow in Dartmouth Memorial Gardens.
