Brendan Mark Mackereth died on June 9th 2016 at the age of 29. Brendan died peacefully while sleeping in his apartment in Vancouver, British Columbia.

Born in Halifax Nova Scotia, he was the son of Karen and Brian Mackereth.

Brendan entered this world in a battle against his own health. He was born with congenital heart disease and very nearly left us while only an infant, but he had too much fight to give up so soon. Much like the characters in his favourite childhood movie; The Wizard of Oz, Brendan was blessed with tremendous courage, a creative mind, and a big heart. These qualities and his fighting spirit helped Brendan become a provincial champion in both high-school rugby and wrestling, all while managing kidney disease that was diagnosed in his senior year. Brendan’s penchant for the spotlight and flare for the dramatic were apparent from very early on.

Brendan’s passion for the arts shaped much of his life. From early childhood to his most recent days, Brendan would tuck himself away and work quietly for hours at a time. The only sound you would here emanate from his room was the frantic clattering of the keyboard keys as his index fingers tried in vain to keep up with the story his mind was telling. Brendan’s artistic endeavors eventually led him to the west coast and enrolment in the Vancouver Film School. Upon graduation in 2011, Brendan subsequently performed in numerous short films, commercials and theater productions including a leading role in the recent theater production 12 Angry Jurors.

Some people did not take the time to truly appreciate Brendan, but for those of us who did, we were rewarded with copious amounts of love and laughter. And for that, we will remain forever grateful.

Survived by his Mom and Dad; brothers Jason, Jacob and Christian; his lone niece, Ella; and his long-time partner Iris Lopez Ramirez.

Visitation will be held Wednesday, June 15th from 7 – 9 pm at the Dartmouth Atlantic Funeral Home. Funeral Service will be held Thursday, June 16th at 10:00 am at St. Peters Catholic Church, Father Jim Richards officiating. A reception at the Old Triangle will follow the service.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Canadian Congenital Heart Alliance, the Kidney Foundation of Canada, or the Canadian Transplant Society.
