Alan Edgar Moore
June 8, 1925 - May 9, 2014
MOORE, Alan Edgar-88, of Dartmouth, passed away on May 9th, 2014 at the Adelaide Respite Inn, Waverley.
Born in Windsor, Ontario, he was a son of the late Olive (Graveline) and Clarence Moore.
Alan was a member of the Royal Canadian Navy and the Reserve Forces between 1947 and 1977. He was a member of the Canadian Naval Air Group and was awarded the CNAG volunteer of the year award. Following his military career, Alan became manager of the Shearwater Flying Club and earned his fixed wing aircraft pilot's licence so he could participate fully in the Club's activities. Every opportunity to fly was happily taken, often with one of his sons or a grandchild by his side.
Alan had a keen interest in finances- he worked as a financial planner and was a member of the Cole Harbour Credit Union, working in the branch for several years. He was a dedicated volunteer with the Shearwater Aviation Museum and pursued fund raising opportunities across Nova Scotia.
As a young man, Alan joined the Freemasons. He was a member of the John Albro Lodge no. 122, rising to the position of Grand Master of the Lodge. Alan was happy and proud to represent his Lodge at events over the years and was always ready to offer support to his Brothers.
Early in his life Alan decided that he did not want to be a farmer like his father and brother; that did not keep him from enjoying gardening- he shared his tomato plants, grown from seed and took great joy in growing corn and cantaloupe in the rocky soil of Ross Road. Not much could beat a meal of corn on the cob, fresh from the garden, in Alan's eyes. The directions for cooking of the corn were detailed and freely shared!
Despite the risk to his fingers, Alan was an avid woodworker; he spent many hours in the basement of their home creating furniture, spindles & railings and toys. In the early 1960's Alan and Betty joined a co-operative of Navy members to build their home on Ross Road, where they lived until 2005.
In 1969, when given the opportunity to purchase lake front property on Caribou Lake, Lunenburg Co., Alan and Betty decided to build a summer cottage. The lack of electricity or a road to the lots didn't slow the construction- with the help of friends and family, the cottage was built using hand tools. The building supplies were loaded on a small motor boat or floated across the lake. The "Cottage" has become the site of countless memories and is one of the greatest gifts Alan gave to his family.
Alan is survived by his wife Elizabeth (Bennett); sons, Steven “Sam”, Dartmouth, Paul (Shelley) of St. Albert, AB; grandchildren, Sara and Alexander; numerous nieces and nephews across North America.
He was predeceased by his siblings; Bill, Gail, Murial, Helen, Winnifred (in infancy) and Jean (in infancy).
Cremation has taken place. A Masonic service, followed by visitation will be held on Sunday June 8th from 2-4 pm in Atlantic Funeral Home, 771 Main Street, Dartmouth.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Shearwater Aviation Museum.
The family wishes to thank the staff of the Adelaide Respite Inn and Shannex Parkland on Baker Drive for their kindness and care.
